Becoming ranked is a challenge Providence will face all season
When Providence took the court against USF they knew what was on the line. A 14-2 (4-0) start. An ongoing undefeated record at home. An undefeated conference record clash between rivals (UConn). And of course an opportunity at the top 25.
Providence coming into the game was 27th in both the Coaches and Media poll receiving the second most votes. After beating Boston College earlier in the week at home a USF victory would have all but assured them a place in the top 25. This was of course before they fell flat on their faces in front of 11,540 fans at the Dunkin Donuts Center.
"We have to understand, that we can never take any game for granted. USF is a talented young group and they never let up. We have to learn from this and move forward," Coach Cooley said after the loss. Providence on the whole should by no means be upset. The Friars were picked to finish 11th in the rebuilt Big East and through 4 games they sit behind only #17 UConn and a surprisingly spunk #21 Villanova.
The Friars will regroup and rebuild their intensity as they prepare for a clash against UConn. The schedule finally amps up for the first time with 3 of their next 4 on the road and two against ranked teams. Providence up until this point has played a very weak schedule and has rarely left New England.
