New York, NY -

The Providence Frairs are Big East champs for the first time since 1994 after a a great defensive stand versus a hot Memphis bunch. Providence and Memphis both struggled from the field shooting 36%, but in the end free throws won it for Providence as they hit 12 compared to Memphis' 6. Providence will now also make their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2004 where they lost as a five seed in the first round. Coach Cooley will be making his first appearance as well and seemed very excited after the game. "We played great team defense out there. I am proud of my guys how we've battled this entire tournament. We were two minutes away from going home against Temple and now we are the champs. Can't say enough good things about our guys tonight." Providence will head home and await Selection Sunday tomorrow to see where, who, and what seed is in their future.
